5 Tage Wüsten Wander Urlaub in Namibia ab Windhoek | Drucken |  E-Mail

The Namib Rand Nature Reserve represents all facets of the Namib Desert like vegetated red dunes in different shapes and colours, endless plains and mountains. Covering an area of some 160.000 hectares a number of former sheep farms were fenced off to create an area where once again the wildlife could roam free in their natural habitat. This desert experience trail shows the diversity of desert organism, adaptation and scenery.

Day 01:
Pick up time at about 8h00 in Windhoek. Heading southwards we will reach “Die Duine House” at Namib Rand Nature Reserve in the afternoon. A 2-3 hours walk takes us to our first overnight stop in the dunes. The terrain mainly consists of vegetated red sand dunes. Drinking water will be available in at the camp. (LD)

Day 02:
In the morning we still walk over dune fields. The afternoon terrain consists more of plains, rocks and mountain area. Going up the “Kudu Gorge” on “Schafsberg” with a nice view over the red sand dune area. We will view some prehistoric hunting hides (stone circles) used by the early San Bushmen. A game trail leads us to a dry waterfall; in good rain years there might be water. Maybe we are lucky to see Kudu or Baboon. Again we walk up a gorge to the top a mountain and descend to overnight at “Ysterwielnek”. Drinking water will be available at the camp. (BLD)

Day 03:
In the morning we walk up to 5 hours along the foot of the mountain. After crossing the gravel plain we ascend about 100m to reach our overnight camp by lunchtime. In the afternoon we will explore the surrounding area of the camp. Drinking water will be available at the camp. (BLD)

Day 04:
By climbing up 450m to the top of “Gorrasis Mountain” the vegetation type changes. Here you will find different reptiles from observed on plains and dunes. The view over the dune fields and the plain in all directions is brilliant. By descending we reach into the “Horseshoe Wilderness Area”. Overnight camping again in the dunes. Bucket showers and long drop toilets available. (BLD)

Day 05:
A short walk through the vegetated sand dunes leads us back to “Die Duine House”. Drive back to Windhoek (BL)

Climate: The seasons in Namibia are revered compared to those in Europe. During the European winter months we have summer in Namibia. Winter and summer in Namibia vary to those in Europe. Winter is the cooler dry season, which is characterised by high temperature changes and hardly any rainfall. It can get below freezing at night (June to August) particularly in the desert but day temps may rise to 25c. The Namibian summer (December to March) is the rainy season and it seldom rains much at other times. Summer months can easily reach 30-35c. It is essential to pack suitable clothes. Bring sandals, walking shoes/boots, light cotton clothes (shorts and shirts) a jacket or fleece pullover and long trousers. We have seen everything from beanies and gloves to bikinis...

The trails are not difficult but challenging. Fitness and good condition is essential the the trails entail 7-8 hours walking and you have to carry your luggage every day including food and water (each person 12-15kgs). As some of the routes lead through rough terrain and over large boulders it requires well-balanced and secure walking. Please be aware of high temperature fluctuations as mentioned above
